Upon Van Raalte's invitation, he settled in Holland and established its first tannery. In 1867, Phanstiehl opened the City Hotel beside his general store, which is now the site of Readers World Bookstore. The Boone family owned and managed the City Hotel several times before eventually selling it in 1923 to August Landwehr, co-founder of The Holland Furnace Company. The hotel was demolished in 1924, making way for the impressive Warm Friend Tavern, which remains a landmark to this day.John H.
